The ArctiChildren InNet project group met in Alta, Norway 7.-9.10.2013 for a seminar.
The topic was “Challenges to use social media in health promotion“.
On Monday we started the seminar by introducing all the participants from all four countries. We had over 30 people attending the seminar including project actors as well as students from Kemi-Tornio Univeristy of applied sciences and teachers from the pilot schools in Finland, Norway and Russia. Three students from Kemi-Tornio would document the whole trip with video and pictures and more on that will be published on our site at www.arctichildren.com later this fall.
The second day started with presentations from Eva C. Schjetne (UiT) and Faltin Karlsen (Norwegian School of Information Technology). Eva presented views on health promotion and social media with an introduction on digital life in the future. Our key note speaker, Faltin Karlsen talked about excessive gaming and challenges concerning digital or computing literacy among pupils, parents and teachers using ITC.
After lunch we continued with workshops where we discussed about the Internet governance and regulation, media policy and surveillance and children’s competence in programming and computing knowledge. Next our pilot school teachers got on the stage with upadates from each country. We heard a lot of good examples about health promotion in schools, Last task of the day was a workshop using Recalling future -method. We thought what the project will look like one year from now; what we have done and by what means. Tuesday ended with dinner at Alfa/Omega restaurant.
Wednesday morning began with updates on the budget and overall economic situation. We planned our future activities in the project and set dates for our next meetings via video and in person. We also got to hear thesis ideas from three students and we can expect cross-border co-operations between countries by our students as well. After lunch we all started our journey back home again a little wiser.
