The Marketer’s Crash Course in Visual Content Creation is a guide about visual content creation for non-designers or non-photographers. Writer collects a lot of crucial information and tips to one place: about understanding of content purpose to photo quality and from colour palette to spacing. It´s made to improve the understanding of design-making.
Findings
Today social media is a huge part of digital marketing and it´s all about visual content. For many operators’ inspirational content creation is crucial for successful business. That’s why it´s very important for all of us to increase knowledge about visual content creation. Even if we are not personally responsible for creating visual content, it is important to understand why it is produced, for what purpose, and to have a grasp of what constitutes as good visual content. Not to mention the importance of this understanding should we need to create such content ourselves. Visual content in social media, for instance often gives customers their first impression of a product or service. That is why the theme of this article is relevant to this Study Unit.
The article is already quite outdated. Lack of new information makes it feel little uninspiring. Although it is partly very outdated there´s still a lot of useful information to learn about visual content creations.
I can´t help but agree that less is more in designs and that´s one of the best tips from the writer. It´s easiest to see that the creator of the content is a non-designer when the content is full of everything. It’s annoying, tiring and it takes away the interest. By increasing knowledge, it would be easy for anybody to avoid making that kind of a beginner’s mistake. You don’t need to be a professional but when making visual content, one should be interested in the topic to be able to make fine content.
One of my favourite topics was the one about colours. Every content creator should use colour matching tools to make the content look visually balanced. It´s not easy to understand colours even for professional designers. The writer pointed out the two most important things about colours. Different colours give you different feelings, what do you want to convey with the colour? And which other shades and colours work nicely together with chosen main colour. The first one might be difficult to answer. However, the answer for the second one is in the pallet – so don´t be afraid to use it. In my opinion, those were some valuable thoughts to consider.
The writers also talked about effects such as drop shadows as a visual effect. It was probably a cool effect ten years ago but why would anyone like to use it as an effect without purpose anyway? A shadow is formed only from correctly aligned light and that´s the only way it should appear. You can find outdated sections of this type in the article. There are also tools and programs mentioned that no longer exist.
Conclusion
Anyone who’s interested in these matters is also able to learn to make at least decent visual content. When you learn at least the main points about it you get the keys to success. I learned a lot and got new ideas on how to make designs with a purpose – and there needs to be a purpose for everything you do. Even though the article is a little outdated it still inspired me and now I’m really looking forward to making some new visual content myself.

Hello Ville.
Thank you for your blog post. It was really interesting to read. I, like probably most of us, use apps like Instagram. But never have i even thought about colours of my posts. I usually use some filters and that’s it. It makes me happy when you wrote: “You don’t need to be a professional but when making visual content, one should be interested in the topic to be able to make fine content.” It gives me hope, that maybe one day, I can do this better! hymy
