Imagine a quiet and peaceful small lake surrounded by trees with yellow and orange leaves, few birds swimming in the lake and only a handful of other people around you in the camping area. That’s the exact view that I had on a road trip few years ago, it was amazing!
Planning for the trip
In the autumn of 2022, me and my partner decided that we wanted to go for a road trip to Salla and its surroundings. We had already been to Lapland many times, but not in the eastern parts of it. Previously we had stayed in small rental cottages, but this time we wanted to try something new, which was sleeping in the car.
While planning for the trip, we came across with a camping area called Sallainen Cottages Caravan and decided that it would be a perfect place for us for the few nights.
The camping area had everything you could need, whether you are travelling with a camper or just a tent. Plenty of space for camping, toilet facilities, saunas, small kitchen, few campfire sites, a beach and a boat available for renting.
Things to do in Salla
We kept the camping area as our “basecamp” and in the mornings we packed up the car and drove to explore the surrounding areas. Few of my personal favorites were:
- visiting Salla Museum of War and Reconstruction
- hiking to top of the Iso Pyhätunturi
- visiting Salla Wilderness Park
By sleeping in the car on a camping area, we were able to keep the costs of the trip low and it was also a new fun experience as itself already. I really recommend giving it a try at least once, if you haven’t already! Although Salla is at least in my opinion more a winter destination, it’s also really beautiful in the autumn and perfect for quiet relaxation. Just what we were looking for!
