A wise way – probably not

I wasn’t wise enough to take the easiest way with my studies. It would have been much easier to take care of these things a bit more early. But here I am. With a family – husband and two kids – and a full time job. It takes a lot of planning, or just pure “cross your fingers and hope it works” kind of attitude to make things work.

Chill and multitask

The work I do is physically demanding and sometimes also mentally. After a hard day at work I usually allow myself a short break before getting other things started. 10-15 minute nap is my weapon of choice. Every day that is not possible, because there are also hobbies in our family. Both of our sons play football, so from 2-3 evenings per week we tend to drive them to practice. Fortunately the sports arenas offer good spots to study or work ( sorry about the link in Finnish ) when kids are doing their thing on the field. I have been writing essays, doing exams and listening to lectures multiple times in football stand. Doable! You have to take the time that is offered and use it wisely.

Deadline is my best motivator

Sometimes it comes to this. Deadline closes and there is not an empty space in my calendar. Only solution is to make some space for studying. Im in a very lucky situation, where I have the best co-workers, big-enough kids and supportive husband. It helps. A lot. When it comes to closing deadlines, I tend to be at my best. Pressure makes me work more efficiently. Some sugary treats in addition will help. Would highly recommend!

Pulla is a suitable treat for studying, works well also as a reward.
Some sugar is needed now and then.

Humor, fellow students and friends

It’s extremely important to have people around who you can ask all the stupidest questions. I consider myself as an open person and I’m able to laugh at myself – one has to do so from time to time – but it’s very embarrassing to act stupid in front of people you don’t know very well. Most of the students in this course – unfortunately – belong to that category for me. Because of the way we study, we haven’t been able to get to know each other very well. That is why everyone should have at least that one person, who is “in the same boat”, probably wondering about the same things as you are, and is ready to answer your stupid questions anytime you need an answer.
