Ivalo is a small town in Northern Finland next to two large national parks and also next to four wilderness areas. Lapland is a winter wonderland

What on earth we Northern Finns do during the winter time?

At the winter you can try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, hiking, fat biking or ice fishing. After a long day of being outdoors you can sit back in the sauna and maybe try ice swimming.

If you are an animal-lover you can visit husky kennel or reindeer farm or try horseback riding with the magnificent Finnish horses on forest trails.

Winter is also time for relaxation, enjoying the campfire and maybe cooking a meal with it. Sometimes you can also see the auroras playing on the night sky.

During the summertime we Finns practically live outdoors. Summer is time for adventures and exploring. Hiking deep into the wilderness, setting a camp and try some fishing. Would you like to know how does it feel when you catch a monstrous pike or a enchantingly beautiful char?

In the area there’s a lot of lakes, rivers and ponds full of fish.

If you aren’t that much into fishing why not try kayaking through the national park or if you like speed we have  perfect sport for you, rafting!

When hiking or biking in the forest there’s a small chance you can also run into wildlife. In our forests lives different kinds of animals like moose, birds and forest fowls, foxes, wolverines, bears and wolves. Encountering a wild beast could be a pretty scary experience, but usually they are aware of your presence from afar and they flee before you even notice them. So being in the wilderness is really safe.

The end of summer offers us a lot of unique flavors. Late summer and early autumn is time for berry and mushroom piking. It’s a wonderful experience to pick for example cloudberries from a swamp and afterwards enjoy them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

We Finns are nature and forest people and nature has a lot to offer, so come and enjoy the miracles of the wilderness with us in Ivalo.

Best regards Kati
