Introducing Hiekkasärkät Kalajoki

Perhaps you’re planning your next summer holiday? You may be living in Finland and looking for a travel experience nearby. In this post I will let you know some tips on what to do if you decide to visit my hometown’s tourist resort by the beach called Hiekkasärkät.

Let’s talk about facts

First, let’s get to know the place I am telling you about.

Kalajoki is located on the West Coast of Finland. It’s approximately 130 kilometres away from one of the biggest cities in Finland, Oulu. The population of Kalajoki is about 12 400 people and the area is 2391,3 km2. Hiekkasärkät is located about 7 kilometres away from the actual city center. The beaches are approximately 3,5 kilometres long.

As I mentioned Kalajoki is my dear hometown and I have worked there as a receptionist during the busiest months of tourism for a few summers. Last summer of 2021 was huge as I have never experienced such amount of tourists there. It seems like the popularity of Hiekkasärkät is growing remarkably.

My top 5 things to do at the beach resort

  1. Seikkailugolf. Fun minigolfing outside with a twist of adventure.
  2. Sunbathing by the beach.
  3. Seikkailupuisto Pakka. The biggest adventure park in Nordic countries. It includes a mega zip line, which I recommend especially.
  4. The restaurants. A wide range of different types of restaurants with lovely terraces. For example Sandy Kelt Irish Bar, Beachrose, ShangriLa and Beach Bar Surffari.
  5. Jukupark. A water park for the hot days.

A tip from a local

Lastly I would suggest you to plan your trip for the month of August, if possible. This is the time when the busiest season has settled down. You can find more information about Kalajoki by clicking here. You can also get to know another Finnish resort by going to Enni’s blog post. Enni tells you about Ounasvaara, which locates in the city Rovaniemi that I’m currently living in.

Comment down below and let me know, if you have ever visited Hiekkasärkät Kalajoki. I would love to hear your experiences and what were your favorite things to do there.
