Snowboarding is all about style. When a snowboarder expresses his/her style, snowboarding becomes art. Think about a young guy in art class with no capabilities in drawing or painting. Frustrating, could someone say. What if he could express the art and his style through snowboarding, his favourite hobby?

 It is all about style

As a teenager I was a huge fan of Torstein Horgmo, a Norwegian snowboarder. There were also other snowboarders that I looked up to like Shaun White who won almost every competition he took part in but Torstein was always the best. And the reason why he was the best is that he was the most stylish snowboarder in the world.

“The most important thing is your riding style.”

Do you look stiff and tense when riding? Not good. Do you look fast and agressive but still composed? Very good. Torstein’s style was somewhat lazy but still explosive which made his style look very good. When others were just doing grabs, Torstein was tweaking the grabs to make them look more stylish.

You can make your riding look even better by expressing your style with what you wear. At the time Torstein was on the top of the world, he wore big baggy clothes: yellow jacket and black pants. Those were the most stylish clothes a snowboarder could have. Nowadays snowboarding clothes are strongly influenced by street style.

“The rider that stands out from the others is usually the most stylish rider.”

Snowboarding as an art

For non-snowboarders it can be hard to understand but snowboarding is live art when a run or a trick is not filmed.

“When a snowboarder expresses his/her style, snowboarding becomes art.”

When filmed on video or taken photo of, the run or the trick becomes even more art. For example Finnish freerider Antti Autti published a video part called Roam  that expresses all the seasons of the year trough the eyes of a freeride-snowboarder.

Snowboarding for me is an inspirational way of self expression. If I could have produced a video part as an assignment for my art class when I was a teenager, I would have been so excited.

Do you express yourself through your style or sport? Tell me in the comments!
