Kelingking beach 101

Are you adventurous and looking for your next travel destination? I’m here to tell you about one of the most breathtaking beaches I have ever seen and prepare you for what to expect when you go. Kelingking beach is a ”hidden” beach in Nusa Penida, an island close to Bali, Indonesia. It is known for its cliffs that many have described to look like a dinosaur and its dangerous hike down to the sand.

What to expect

The hike down is very steep and challenging and can take up to 60 minutes. The hike starts off with stairs that get worse as you go down. The path turns into rocky trail with unstable railings. At some points the ”path” is just a cliff with a rope to help you with and holes to stick your feet into. The whole path down is very narrow which is why I would recommend going when there are least amount of people around. That’s why we went at sunrise, which also helped with the heat.

What to bring

Only bring the minimum because the hike is very challenging and carrying too much stuff will make it even more difficult!

  • good shoes (the path can be slippery and rocky so please do not wear flipflops for your own safety!)
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • swimwear

Who should go

  • people with good basic fitness
  • people who are adventurous and adrenaline junkies
  • people who are not afraid of hights
  • people who want to challenge themselves

What is on the beach

The beach itself is stunning but the feeling of success after the hike is even better. The waves and current are often very strong, which is why I don’t recommend swimming there unless you are very comfortable with your skills. However if you decide to go, there is a big chance to see manta rays. I’ve heard that you can sometimes even spot them up from the cliff! Instead of swimming we just went on the shore and sat down in the water. The waves were so strong it tossed us around which to us was entertaining. HEADS UP! If you decide to do this, be ready to have your hair full of sand for a week!

Also be aware of monkeys! They can take your stuff!

I hope everyone a safe hike. Be careful!
