Are you planning a trip for the next summer? Have you ever visited in Kokkola?

Yoy may know already, domestic tourism is popular nowadays, it is also ecoIogical. Im going to tell you a little bit about my hometown. City of Kokkola was founded over 400 years ago by Swedish king Gustav II Adolf. Kokkola is located in the middle of Finland, on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. The easiest way to travel is by train or car.  You can also fly to Kokkola-Pietarsaari airport. The train ride between Helsinki to Kokkola takes around 3 hours and 40 minutes and between Kokkola and Rovaniemi 5 hours. Kokkola is bilingual and population is about 48 000.

Facts

City by the sea. The sea has always been a historically important trade route.

Port of Kokkola is the third largest general port in Finland. Cargo traffic throught the port has experienced a powerful growth thanks to development efforts characterized by long term and throught planning. City is also known for its expertise in chemistry. One of the Europes biggest lithium deposits.

The Old Wooden Town Neristan is a gem at the centre of Kokkola and it is one of our country’s most extensively preserved historical area of wooden houses. Craftsmen, seafarers, merchants and shipowners used to live there. During the summer, tour guides organize walking tours there. They have exciting stories to tell. If you are particularly interested in Finnish history i recommend  the tours.

As far as is known the only landing craft ever to be captered from the British Royal Navy is on display in the English park in Kokkola. Battle at Kokkola on June 7, 1854; more than 200 English soldier tried to come ashore in nine paddle box boats. Nine english soldier were killed.

Things to do

During summer season M/S Jenny operates trips to lighthouse island Tankar. You can explore day trip or stay overnight.

Events in the summer: Mustakari memories festival, Kokkolan viinijuhlat, Kokkolan venetsialaiset etc. The wine festival is a new event, it was held for the first time last year.

Restaurants and cafes i highly recommend: Vohvelikahvila, Mustakari and Nera. I think these places are worth experiencing and the food is especially good.

Four quality hotels in the city center or accommodation by the sea in a campsite. Near camping located meripuisto park where you can example play padel, work out outdoor gym, enjoy sun, swim etc..

The longest sandy beaches in the nordic countries (15 km shoreline) located of the Vattajanniemi. Vattajanniemi is about 40 km away from city centre. Here you will find a quaranteed peaceful place to enjoy the sun.

If you enjoy swimming or traveling with children i recommend you our swimming center. Summertime, you can also swim outdoors and enjoy the sun.

Museums i recommend: K.H. Renlund museum (art and urban history), Kaarlela Museum of local history and culture and the toivonen animal park and the peasent museum (speacially if you are road trip and looking for nice pit stop).
