The Earth has been going through years of big changes for the past four years. People’s movements on Earth have undergone major changes. Climate change, COVID and then the war in Ukraine. Obtaining visas has been tightened and the challenging financial situation has limited who can travel. Can the future megatrends in travelling be predictable in any way in a rapidly changing worldview?
Because of big changes, the future megatrends are difficult to predict, but one trend seems certain to be coming true. That is sustainability and travelling without wrecking the globe. In the article Skift, Megatrends 2025, Dennis Schall reflects on the changes in the behaviour of tourists to this time in which we live. Travelers are increasingly conscious of their environmental and social impact when exploring new destinations. I have seen this rising trend in my own work over the past few years. I work for a water protection association. People are more aware of their actions and the impacts of their choices.

Regenerative tourism
In future megatrends, regenerative travel seems to have become popular among richer travellers as well. While exploring the nature and sights of a tourist destination, you can, for example, plant a few trees in the nearby forest or collect rubbish along the route. It remains to be seen whether passengers’ enthusiasm will be enough to continue this development if the same amount of money is no longer available for tourism as before. Or will cheap package travel, lying on a tourist beach and cheap mass flights return?
Meaningful trip experience
New possibilities and selections of virtual experiences. The ability to work remotely from anywhere in the world. All this has created new ways of experiencing and seeing the world. This is also what the future traveller wants. Possibility to spend extensive periods at the destination. And that way got in touch with the population and culture of the destination. I also dream of spending longer periods in another country. My dream is coming true soon when my family and I are going to Argentina for a month in February. We take care of our studies and work virtually, while the other hand is eating empanadas! What is your future travel dream?
