I was totally surprised when I was been informed that we are going to Latvia for IDEP course. We are so lucky as the students from the previous class only went to Kemi which is our neighbouring city. We are always making this joke like we are learning international tourism management but it is so hard to get international experience. Now, it comes to the reality! In this blog, I will share some interesting places for rural tourism in Tukums.

Who am I?

Greetings to my lovely readers! My name is Chen Jin, AKA Jason. About four years ago, I travelled from China to here, Finland, to start my college studies. My cousin used to study in Vasa and got his master’s degree at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Following his steps, I came here to explore my Nordic journey. I met not only native students here. In the second semester, I had a project work with some exchange students. It became the reason for me to apply for exchange as well. I think everyone can guess what is the story next. Yes. It came with covid-19 pandemic and my application is cancelled. Luckily, I got another chance this time.

Preperational work for Latvia.

Influenced by a Russian TV series called Ekaterina, I personally got some interest in the history of Tsarist Russia and the First World War. Therefore, the name, Latvia, is not a stranger to me. Perhaps, it is because of the complex historical background of Riga, the capital of Latvia. The style of the buildings here is really multiple. When I was searching for pictures and information about Riga, I was totally attracted by those beautiful churches and castles. They are telling the story of the past and the dream of the future.

Research about rural tourism in Tukums

The task for my group is to research about Tukums as a rural destination. When I was searching online. I found two places which are very interesting. The first one is the chocolate workshop. It is combined with a Chocolate museum run by a company called Pure Chocolate. Tourists can not only taste chocolate there but also learn to make chocolate in their workshop. Another one is the fisher’s farm. It is the farm of Iveta and Oskars Celkarts “Dieniņas” in Bērzciems. They are trying to preserve their lifestyle and history and give it to more and more people. Tourists can try diverse activities on the shore, listen to their stories and history and there is a performance in their native language. What’s more, they can also experience the process of fish smoking and taste them!

This showed they are teaching the process of making chocolate.
