About the author
Coming to Finland 3 years ago to start my Tourism study, I have seen an enormous positive change in my life, both out and inside. Based in Vietnam, this 23-year-old girl finds it interesting and exciting to explore European countries’ cultures and their diverse tourism operations. This blog post will take you with me on a “research journey” about the destination that I will visit in 1 week – Tukums (Latvia).
Since my pre-experience for the Tukum region is likely empty, the following researched information mainly supports my study about the destination as a preparation. Accordingly, I hope you also find the information useful and beneficial to know better about the Tukums region and Latvia in general.
1. Location
According to Wikipedia, Tukums is a Latvian municipality formed in 2009 with a population recorded 27,613 in 2020. This 13.95 km2 area is 69km away from Riga – the capital of Latvia. The following image can illustrate better the Latvian municipalities.

2. Accessibility to Tukums region
Since the location is closeby to the capital Riga, It is easy to access the Tukums region by common transportation such as cars, buses, trains, or even airplanes. Visit Tukums website has clearly given all the necessary information for people coming to visit the area.
3. Tourism industry in Latvia and Tukums as a tourist destination
Tourism is an important sector in Latvia, directly contributing to 4.8% of Latvian GDP in 2019. In 2021, OECD recorded 61200 employees starting their jobs related to this industry. As in many other countries, COVID-19 has hit hard on the Latvian tourism sector. This has been causing various challenges for tourism businesses to survive while complying with the government’s policy. Despite those difficulties, there are still many positive signs of recovery from the tourism industry in this post-pandemic time.
Domestic travel accounts for the majority part of tourism. Since 2010, international tourists arriving in Latvia have been increasing more strongly. Most of them come from Russia, Germany, and the two other Baltic states. One of the reasons for this rising demand is the affordable prices and the unconventional way of travel that the destination holds (Statista 2023).
Nature, culture, and rural tourism are the three most popular types of tourism operating in Latvia. The place itself holds many different cultural and historical values. Together with the natural and mostly untouched ecosystem, Latvia attracts tourists from all over the world.
Despite the small area, Tukums still has many opportunities to operate different types of tourism. Examples can be listed namely walking on nature trails, visiting historical places, cross-country skiing and so many more. Below are some of the images of the beautiful Tukums region which tourists can visit.
