When driving around the Latvian countryside, it became clear to me what rural tourism really stands for. Quite frankly, we were driving in the middle of nowhere, where the streets got more narrow and unpaved the further inland and closer to rural areas we got. Here are my highlights of our visit to Tukums municipality!
Before visiting rural tourism locations
Before we get to the actual rural tourism destinations in Tukums, here are a few things you should remember when traveling in the countryside.
- Check the location beforehand: It is possible that your internet connection won’t work in the countryside. It’s a good idea to get the address before you hit the road! This actually happened to us so I’m speaking from first-hand experience.
- Bring a guide or local with you, if possible: Some rural tourism destinations may not have guides or signs in English so bring someone with you who can translate. We were lucky enough to have a Latvian teacher from Turiba University with us to translate and ask for directions in the countryside.
- Enjoy the countryside: You will be driving a lot between different locations so try to embrace the views! Maybe try birdwatching, a surprisingly popular activity in Tukums municipality due to its rich fauna.
Now that you have a few tips to prepare you for the trip, let’s get a deeper dive into rural tourism destinations!
Kangari snail Farm
Obviously, I have to start with the snail farm. Located in the rural area of Tukums municipality stands a little snail farm with a guesthouse on the side. During our visit, we learnt about the snails and got to taste them as well. We also heard about the history of the farm and how it all began 15 years ago by accident. The guesthouse on the other hand was very charming and filled with ancient items and furniture. Would you have guessed that the farm produces 100kg of snails each year? I know I wouldn’t, but as a foodie I was really excited to visit the location and it didn’t dissapoint.

Easy to say, the snail farm is an extremely unique location. It’s definitely worth the visit if you happen to be in the area!
Basket weaving and Kalndaķi farm
The second place we visited was a basket weaving company in the heart of the countryside. I was surprised to hear that they are the biggest basket weaving company in Latvia. They even have another workshop located in Riga. Pinumu Pausale makes all sorts of baskets and interior design items from willow by hand. The company was established in 2015, but the handicraft has been taught in the family for generations.
As a rural tourism destination, it’s only natural that the owners don’t focus on one product only. They also have a guesthouse and provide a few cabins for those interested in glamping. Additionally, they have farm animals, vegetable and fruit farm as well as a helipad. Yes you read that right. Clearly they provide something for everyone.

The old town of Tukums
As mentioned in my previous post about my pre-experience, I’m a huge fan of architecture. Naturally, I enjoyed seeing the cobblestone streets and old wooden buildings dating all the way back to the 1800’s. The streets have such charm to them and each building has its own unique look, yet they all fit together. I could just imagine a horse carriage making its way to the market square with homemade handicrafts and vegetables from your own farm plot. If you get the chance, I would recommend to check it for yourself!

I’m glad I got to visit Tukums since I don’t know if I would’ve otherwise visited the area. As a rural tourism destination, the region has a lot to offer for all kinds of travelers.
