Joy of creation and wildlife

Workshops for Utsjoki snow and winter
In this land-based art education project, pupils in Utsjoki’s local schools joined in different snow and winter-themed workshops. The project aimed to develop Arctic art education through workshops and explore and support schoolchildren’s relationship with nature and local culture through contemporary art.

House Marks
In the house mark workshop, participants designed their personal house marks, which were then cut as large stencils on sturdy paper. The stencils were then brought outside into the snow, where the marks were realised using fine ash. Finally, the completed stencils were hung on display on one of the school’s dining room walls.

Tales of the Snow
In the Stories about Snow workshop, the students shared their experiences of the nature of Utsjoki and their relationship with it by storytelling. The purpose of the workshop was to reflect on one’s own relationship with nature and express thoughts through snow sculpting art.

Our project was to implement a workshop in Vikajärvi School for grades 3-6. The goal was to explore participants’ identities through introspection, cooperative art-based activities and personal relations to Vikajärvi. We approached the theme of sustainability portraits through the community and its members’ ability to change and adapt.
