From Norway, the <strong>Nord University<\/strong> and <strong>Polarsirkelen Friluftsr\u00e5d<\/strong>, an association for outdoor education, participated. From Rovaniemi, the <strong>multidisciplinary arts association Piste<\/strong> contributed with movement and drama pedagogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The art-based activities in Narsaq, a small Inuit community of around 1,400 inhabitants, offered teacher educators, postgraduate students, and students of art and education a unique perspective on the encounter between Greenlandic life and the school system, highlighting both opportunities and challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-large-font-size\"><blockquote><p>\u201cInside the school building, it felt like any other Nordic primary school. But once we stepped outside, we were surrounded by a unique environment and culture, where the children and youth were the experts, and we were the learners. In developing Arctic art education, we asked how this eco-cultural knowledge could be made visible and placed at the centre of learning and interaction,\u201d<\/p><cite> project coordinator and university lecturer <br><strong>Annamari Manninen<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives from the Narsaq community\u2014local museum staff, cultural coordinators, teachers, youth workers, care home employees, students, and young people\u2014were all actively involved in the multidisciplinary collaboration. The artworks were then exhibited and shared with the community. This approach introduces artistic creation and scientific inquiry methods while supporting local identity and fostering connections between community members,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see this fieldwork as a great example of the University of the Arctic\u2019s efforts to promote interdisciplinary cooperation, involve Northern residents in academic activities, and strengthen ties with Indigenous peoples and multiethnic communities through decolonial research and education,\u201d stated <strong>Emeritus Professor Timo Jokela<\/strong>, who initiated the AAE activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Themes such as <strong>Indigenous cultures, decolonisation, and the sustainability transition<\/strong> were central to the workshops. Doctoral researchers <strong>Suvi Autio<\/strong> and <strong>Niko V\u00e4ist\u00f6<\/strong>, working in the <strong>Sustainability Transition (SusTra)<\/strong> doctoral pilot, guided a group of upper secondary students from Inusullivik in producing a short film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogi.eoppimispalvelut.fi\/ngaea\/files\/2025\/06\/Narsaq-AAE_Kuva-3_Autio-scaled-2-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Filming outside in Narsaq with local youth\" class=\"wp-image-201\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Making short film in Narsaq with local youth.
