The Rievdan core team is familiar with life in the far North. The project\u2019s leader, Professor Mirja Hiltunen from the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland, and Korinna Korsstr\u00f6m-Magga, post-doctoral researcher and coordinator of the Rievdan project, have both lived in the region for over 30 years. Jalvvi Mari Ante, also known as Ante Jalvela, the project\u2019s research assistant, comes from Utsjoki, the northernmost part of Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, establishing contact and building trust with participants in a short time can be challenging. That\u2019s where our collaborators come in \u2014 they help us reach out to the people of K\u00e1r\u00e1\u0161johka and Vuoh\u010d\u010du.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first step for Rievdan was to find strong local partners in S\u00e1pmi \u2014 individuals and organizations who understand the local context and community, and who we could collaborate with and rely on throughout the project. On the Finnish side, we found such partners in M\u00e1nnu, the S\u00e1mi Culture Centre for Children,<\/strong> and the S\u00e1mi Youth Council, <\/strong>both operating under the Finnish S\u00e1mi Parliament (https:\/\/samediggi.fi\/en\/<\/a>). These partners have been contributory in helping Rievdan connect with schools and residents in Vuoh\u010d\u010du. In Vuoh\u010d\u010du, we organized art workshops at the local school, which often serves as a communal activity centre for the village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In K\u00e1r\u00e1\u0161johka, we are working with S\u00e1mi D\u00e1iddaguovdd\u00e1\u0161 (SDG)<\/strong>, the S\u00e1mi Center for Contemporary Art (https:\/\/samidaiddaguovddas.no\/<\/a>). The centre functions as an ideal meeting place for the project. Its venues are well suited for hosting art workshops, and it offers participants access to engaging, high-quality art exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The venues at the Vuoh\u010d\u010du school also served larger workshop groups of school-aged children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the knowledge, commitment, and support of our partners in S\u00e1pmi, we\u2019ve had an exceptional start to the Rievdan project. We immediately felt welcomed and at home in both K\u00e1r\u00e1\u0161johka and Vuoh\u010d\u010du.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
