Reflections from the S\u00e1mi and Indigenous Education Conference, 6\u20138 October 2026.<\/em> https:\/\/samas.no\/en\/sami-and-indigenous-education-conference-2026<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around eighty participants were expected to attend the S\u00e1mi and Indigenous Education Conference, but in the end, 260 people from around the world gathered at the S\u00e1mi University of Applied Sciences (S\u00e1mi allaskuvla) in Guovdageaidnu, S\u00e1pmi. Surrounded by breathtaking landscapes of rolling fells stretching towards the horizon, participants came together to share knowledge, experiences and ideas about cultural continuity and sustainability in a rapidly changing North.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference featured inspiring keynote speeches by Professor Rauna Kuokkanen, Professor Ylva Jannok Nutti and the internationally renowned Distinguished Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith. Their contributions explored Indigenous education, its possibilities and transformative potential, and its role in strengthening Indigenous agency and self-determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Linda Tuhiwai Smith is the author of Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous Peoples<\/em> (first published in 1999), a landmark work that has become essential reading for many researchers working with Indigenous communities and knowledge. Having her present at the conference was a true privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n

Rievdan: Art education and community stories<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the first day of the conference, Korinna and Mirja presented the Rievdan project in the session dedicated to duodji, art, and cultural and aesthetic education. Their presentation focused on the development of new genre Arctic art education and explored its pedagogical process through the workshop held in Vuoh\u010d\u010du in September 2025, in which the community artwork Min muorra ja m\u00e1innasiid vuovdi \u2013 Our Tree and the Forest of Stories<\/em> was created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The colourful artwork, painted on the black asphalt in front of the school in Vuoh\u010d\u010du, attracted well-deserved admiration from the audience. We are grateful to the community of Vuoh\u010d\u010du for sharing their creativity, stories and experiences with us. The artwork is a wonderful example of how community-based art education can make local stories visible and create opportunities for communities to reflect on their surroundings and the changes taking place in the North.<\/p>\n\n\n

The conference offered a valuable opportunity to share the experiences of Rievdan and to connect our work with wider discussions on Indigenous education, cultural continuity and community agency. We returned with new inspiration and a deeper appreciation of the many ways in which art and education can support communities in navigating change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This autumn, we look forward to continuing our work by planning and gathering material for the project’s final publication. The publication will bring together experiences and insights from the workshops and collaborative processes carried out during Rievdan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
