Why is moving abroad the best thing that has happened to me?

Do you want to experience living abroad, but you are scared of actually doing it? Do you toy a lot with the idea of living in the country of your dreams, but you keep finding excuses? I am here to convince you that moving abroad alone is one of the most enriching experiences that can happen to you.

Personally, moving to another country for the first time, was one of the best decisions of my life. Since then, I never really stopped traveling, I was working in the Canary Islands, in Mallorca, and currently, I am studying in Finland, and I am not planning to stop traveling. I have collected the 10 best things that I think moving abroad alone has given me.

1. You learn to be independent

When you first live on your own, you are obliged to be independent and support yourself. You start doing the shopping for yourself, cooking, leading a household, etc. You also start counting your own budget, your expenses, your salary, and how much money you have left. It gives you a lot of different knowledge that you will use later in your life.

2. You make friends from all around the world

Meeting new people from all around the world and gaining deeper friendships gives you so much to learn. You don’t only get to know very interesting things about other cultures, but you also become more open-minded, tolerant, and more aware of the realities of life.

3. You build relationships that can be very useful at any time of your life

Getting to know all these people opens up a whole bunch of new opportunities. Having friends in different places and fields of work can help you find new job opportunities, travel opportunities and so much more!

4. You get a deeper understanding of how the world works

When you get to know people from all around the world and discuss your lives and your opinions, you gain so much knowledge about the world. You learn about different cultures, customs, politics, economics, and not only about the country where you live but also about other places that people told you about.

5. Your language skills improve in a way that could never improve in your country

Having a language exam certification doesn’t necessarily mean that you speak that language. But living in the country where that language is spoken, being surrounded by native speakers, and being obliged to speak the language even if you struggle, improves your skills to a new level very fast. You can even learn a new language in a couple of months if you put some effort into it, such as using some phone applications. 6. You learn about other cultures

Have you ever wondered what would it be like to be born in another country? I have, and moving to different places gave me a deeper understanding of what is it like in another country. It gives you an insight into other people’s lives, and it can even help you to find the perfect place for you to live. You can also learn some amazing new recipes that you can make for your family at home, or learn about other languages, habits, fashion, and so much more that interest you!

7. You learn to move out of your comfort zone

When you just moved abroad alone, you don’t immediately have friends to hang out with, and you have to put the effort to get to know people. This could bring some challenging experiences especially if you are rather introverted, but you will eventually thank yourself to move out of your comfort zone because those will be the most unforgettable experiences.

8. You start with a fresh paper with everything

Moving to another country, starting a new job, having new friends allows you to start everything from zero. No one will judge you because of your past, you have a whole new chance to be the person you want to be.

9. You learn to accept yourself

Spending time alone helps you a lot to get to know yourself and improve yourself in many ways and eventually become comfortable with it. Living in a different culture also helps you to find what kind of person you are, who you want to be, and what you have to do to be like that.

10. You gain experience that no one can ever take away from you

I can never forget the first time when I arrived home after my first adventure, and everything felt so different. I could feel that I was a different person than the last time when I was there. Even on the next day, all my memories felt so remote and nostalgic, like all of it was just a really long dream. I felt like I could never truly describe it to someone how was it like to be there, but my memories and photos were there for me, and I could hardly wait to go for my next adventure.
